Aphonopelma steindachneri is a medium-sized tarantula with a distinctive appearance. The body is typically covered in dense setae (hairs), giving it a furry and often slightly shaggy appearance. The coloration can vary, but individuals commonly have a dark brown to black carapace (front part of the body) and abdomen (rear part of the body). The legs are usually dark brown or black with lighter-colored bands.

Adult female Aphonopelma steindachneri can measure around 2.5 to 3 inches (approximately 6.5 to 7.5 cm) in body length, with a leg span of 5 to 6 inches (approximately 12.5 to 15 cm). Adult males are generally smaller, measuring around 2 to 2.5 inches (approximately 5 to 6.5 cm) in body length.

Aphonopelma steindachneri is a ground-dwelling species, typically found in arid regions of Mexico. They inhabit a variety of habitats, including deserts, grasslands, and scrublands. These tarantulas are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night, and spend much of their time in burrows they create in the ground. Burrows offer protection from predators and help regulate temperature and humidity.

As with many tarantula species, Aphonopelma steindachneri possesses urticating hairs on its abdomen. When threatened, they can flick these barbed hairs as a defense mechanism, causing irritation and discomfort to potential predators or threats.
