Brachypelma smithi, commonly known as the Mexican Red Knee tarantula, is a recognized and iconic species of tarantula.

Brachypelma smithi is a medium to large-sized tarantula species. Adult females can have a body length ranging from 5 to 6 inches (approximately 12.5 to 15 cm) or more, while adult males are typically smaller, measuring about 4 to 5 inches (approximately 10 to 12.5 cm) in body length. The leg span of both males and females can reach up to 7 to 8 inches (approximately 17.5 to 20 cm) or more, making them impressive and striking arachnids.

Brachypelma smithi is native to Mexico, primarily found in the western regions of the country. Its natural habitat includes a variety of terrestrial environments, such as dry forests, scrublands, and grasslands. They are often found in areas with loose soil or sandy substrate, which allows them to burrow and create retreats for shelter.

Within their native range, Brachypelma smithi can be found at varying altitudes, from sea level to higher elevations. Their distribution includes states like Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Nayarit in Mexico.
